![]() The Hornady company has taken what they have learned over the years and put it to good use developing some of the industry’s best precision, hunting, and target rounds for all types of firearms owners and enthusiasts. "Ten bullets through one hole" is the philosophy that brought Hornady Manufacturing from a two-man operation in 1949, to a world-leading innovator of bullet, ammunition, reloading tool and accessory design and manufacture today. With a 16 inch barrel, this round will be most effective for hunting within 100 yards. This equals to 420 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards. This 300 BLK ammunition provides 1050 fps at the muzzle with a 16” barrel and averages 998fps at 100 yards. The FBI terminal ballistics test requires an impact velocity of 1,20 fps into ballistic gelatin with 16-18” of penetration and 90% weight retention. I pull the ALG trigger on my Tactical Solutions TSR AR-15. Knowing I’m testing the 208 grain Hornady A-MAX 300 Blackout Subsonic load from Gorilla Ammo, Jared volunteers to hold his shot but remains at the ready. When it’s thirty-five yards out, we decide to take it. If you are looking for reliable, quiet, and effective. ![]() Hornady uses a unique powder optimized for subsonic use that has a low retort and flash signature, so you will still have a quieter experience even unsuppressed. The brass cases are designed with a positive crimp for reliable use in semi-automatic rifles or 300 BLK pistols. The added benefit of the flex tip technology ensures this subsonic ammunition meets FBI terminal ballistic test requirements within 100 yards with a 16-inch barrel. The soft lead core combined with the long grooves allow the 300 AAC projectile to expand on impact while retaining 90% of its weight. The subsonic expanding bullet is designed to expand at low velocities with its lead core, metal jacket with long grooves, and hollow point flex tip. However, the Hornady 300 blackout ammo utilizes a heavy 190gr Sub-X bullet to keep it from breaking the sound barrier while still providing efficient terminal ballistics. While some 300 BLK ammunition is supersonic and more capable of hunting, this caliber is best used with subsonic projectiles. Short barrels and pistol has the option of other powders that have other qualities like noise and gas reduction. The 300 AAC Blackout cartridge was designed for suppressed shooting at the range when making noise is undesirable. Less than that it depends on the application. No functional reason not to use N-120 for subs from 165 and up in an AR. To say N120 won't work with bullets under/over 200 grains without context is a poor statement. I would have to see the actual statement, but my powder choice is based more on rifle configuration than bullet weight. I also have several pounds of N110 and AA#9 if I can't get N120 to do quite what I'm after. Dellet has said the cut over to N120 is 200gr projectiles. The new 190 gr Sub-X (Subsonic - eXpanding) bullet features a lead core. N120 is the best combination of clean, quiet, and acurrate I've used and I'd like to see if I can grt itnto work with 190 gr and subsonic rounds. Hornady 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammunition is designed for accuracy and performance below the speed of sound. If I'm going to stick with N120, I'm going to increase the powder charge from 11grains and step up to 12 grains to get a better case fill. I'm hoping for 980-1000 fps at the muzzle and 2 MOA at 100 yds. I was getting 780 fps average with 10 grains of VVN120 out of a 9" 1:7 twist AAC barrel at that CBTO length.
