The visibility of the motors and gears welcomes our anxiety around technology and progress, drawing the viewer deeper into the content by inviting contemplation of the gears and wires on a symbolic level. Its poignancy lies in its visibility: the gears and wires give the pieces a laid-bare quality. The technology itself is not old or nostalgia-inducing in the sense that an Underwood typewriter might be. Certain characteristics emerge, notably the repurposing of found technology, visible use of mechanics, and a contemplative pathos. ![]() The artworks here subtly engage the ongoing tension between progress and nostalgia. Nostalgia is a powerful, complicated sentiment, intimately connected to progress. Nostalgia Machines, curated by Maya Allison, features kinetic sculptures that use mechanics to nostalgic effect. Yet this exhibition springs from the growing body of work by artists who make free use of technology in ways that undermine this past/future dichotomy. Technology connotes progress, and new media art (usually defined by its use of technology) connotes cutting-edge, future-focused work. If nostalgia looks toward the past, progress belongs to the future, or so it would seem. Outbreaks of nostalgia often follow revolutions. I thought it would be a fun item and great treat. When summer hit and my granddaughter was having her fourth birthday party I went for this shaved ice machine. I researched a little bit for months trying to pick a snow cone machine. A customer who left a five-star rating even said, "Our families new party must have. It also comes with a paper cone dispenser to make serving easier too. As you can see, it holds more than enough crushed ice to keep the party going all day, so there's no need to worry about getting too many "orders" for the cart to keep up with. It may be tall, but it's only 24 inches wide, so when you're not using it, you can just wheel it into a little nook in the garage. This snow cone machine may be a bigger spatial commitment than the compact ones you can store in your pantry, but just look at it and tell us it's not worth it.
